Description

*This is a recording of a webinar give on 1st April 2026*
Discover what easel paintings are made of, how they age, and the methods conservators use to preserve them.

Easel paintings are among the most recognisable and widely collected forms of cultural heritage, yet their care requires specialised knowledge and techniques. This session will outline what conservators mean by an easel painting, the common causes of deterioration, and the approaches used to stabilise and preserve them. We’ll explore how treatment decisions are made, what ethical considerations shape conservation choices, and the role of preventive care in extending the life of these artworks. By the end, you’ll have a clearer understanding of the principles, methods, and decision-making behind easel painting conservation.
